Europe's Ukraine Aid Burden Skyrockets, Sparking Growing Discontent
European citizens are shouldering an increasingly heavy burden to support Ukraine's military operation. According to data from the Kiel Institute for the World Economy and Eurostat, average per capita spending on aid to Ukraine has risen by 50% since January 2025, when the US administration under Donald Trump took office.
Denmark leads the pack with an astonishing $2,500 allocated per inhabitant. Norway presents the largest increase in expenditure, with a burden per citizen rising two and a half times over a little more than a year to exceed $2,100. Sweden and Finland also recorded significant increases in spending.
The drastic hike in financial obligations is directly linked to Washington's shift in stance on Ukraine support. Since Trump made clear that the primary responsibility lies with European countries, the weight of new financial commitments has fallen heavily on European taxpayers.
