Euros Soar as Weak Dollar Meets Hawkish ECB
The euro has reached its highest level in three months due to a weak dollar and hawkish expectations from the European Central Bank. The ECB's tight monetary policy stance is largely driven by energy-driven inflation pressures, which are expected to persist. This has led to a widening yield spread divergence between the US and Europe, supporting the euro.
The US dollar remains near three-month lows as investors pare back bets on a September rate hike by the Federal Reserve amid signs of easing inflation. However, elevated U.S. Treasury yields continue to underpin the dollar, capping its downside.
Market expectations that energy-driven inflation will compel the European Central Bank to maintain a hawkish stance are providing support for the euro. Commerzbank noted that the increasingly tight balance of European natural gas inventories is heightening pressure to import more gas in the coming months, thereby amplifying price risks.
