Eurozone Citizens Invited to Vote on New Euro Banknote Designs

The European Central Bank (ECB) has launched an online consultation for Eurozone citizens to help choose the future design of euro banknotes. The public vote, which runs until September 21, features ten shortlisted proposals unveiled by the ECB in July. These designs are divided into two main themes: 'European Culture' and 'Nature.'

Under the 'European Culture' theme, iconic historical figures such as opera singer Maria Callas, composer Ludwig van Beethoven, and writer Miguel de Cervantes are honored on proposed banknotes. For Greece, the voting holds a dual interest, as Mrs. Callas is featured on the proposed 5-euro note, and one of the final proposals was created by Greek graphic designer Myrsini Vardopoulou.

The ECB's Governing Council will consider both surveys, alongside expert technical assessments, before making a final design decision toward the end of the year. According to ECB President Christine Lagarde, 'Euro banknotes are more than just a means of payment; they are one of the most tangible expressions of Europe.' Mrs. Lagarde added that the new designs will strengthen a shared European identity.
