Eurozone Companies Slow to Embrace Cryptocurrency Payments
A recent survey conducted by the European Central Bank (ECB) found that cryptocurrencies have made little headway as a means of payment in the eurozone. The study, which polled 8,205 companies, revealed that only 0.2% of online merchants and 1% of physical store owners accept cryptos or stablecoins as a form of payment.
Cash remains the dominant method of payment, with 92% acceptance rate in physical stores, followed closely by bank cards at 88%. Mobile payments are also gaining traction, rising from 36% in 2024 to 68% in 2026.
The ECB emphasized its commitment to preserving cash accessibility, even as automation and digital commerce continue to grow. The survey's findings highlight the gap between the crypto industry's ambitions and actual usage.
