Eurozone Confidence Hits Four-Month High Amid Renewed Inflation Worries
The Eurozone's Sentix investor confidence index has reached its highest level since February after improving for a fourth consecutive month in August. The Overall Index rose from -3.1 to 0.9, exceeding expectations of -1.3 and outperforming the previous month's reading. This marks a significant turnaround from the depths of the Iran conflict, which had sent shockwaves through the market.
The improvement is attributed to stronger-than-expected Q2 growth, recovering industrial production and confidence indicators, rising investment and government spending, as well as partial absorption of the confidence shock from the Iran war. However, high energy costs and subdued order books continue to constrain recovery.
Despite the positive trend, renewed inflation concerns have resurfaced sharply, with the Sentix Inflation Barometer deteriorating from -13.75 to -29.25. The Central Bank Policy Barometer also weakened from -8.25 to -15.25, indicating markets expect a more restrictive policy environment.
Germany's Sentix Overall Index improved for a third consecutive month but remains fragile, with Current Situation at -28.3 still pointing to weak underlying conditions despite better expectations.
