Eurozone Inflation Concerns Mount Amid Gas Price Surge

The European Central Bank (ECB) has warned that inflation in the eurozone may be higher than expected, citing rising natural gas and electricity prices as a major concern. According to Peter Kazimir, governor of the Slovak Central Bank and member of the ECB Governing Council, these price increases are becoming an increasingly serious risk.

Kazimir noted that his focus has shifted from oil and fuel prices to gas and electricity prices, which have hit their highest level in almost four years. This surge is partly due to European countries' decision to postpone filling their gas storage facilities in the summer, hoping for a decline in prices following the conflict with Iran.

The effects of these price increases are likely to be felt soon, especially when it comes to heating and electricity costs. Kazimir also warned of impending pressure on food prices due to a combination of factors, including drought in Europe, the El Niño climate phenomenon, and rising prices for diesel and fertilizers.

The ECB's next meeting is scheduled for October 29, with markets pricing in a 60% chance of another rate hike. This would be the institution's second interest rate increase this year. ECB Executive Board member Isabelle Schnabel also echoed Kazimir's concerns, describing worrying trends in energy prices and pointing out that the conflict in the Middle East is proving to be longer-lasting than initially expected.
