Eurozone Inflation Hits 16-Month High at 3.3%
The Eurozone saw its highest inflation rate in three years in August, reaching 3.3% year-over-year. According to Eurostat, this marks a significant acceleration from July's 2.9% and is the highest level since September 2023 when prices rose 4.3%. Energy prices led the increase with a 14.3% jump, surpassing the previous month's 10.3% rise.
Services inflation also contributed to the momentum, growing by 3.0%, while core inflation eased slightly to 2.4% from 2.5% in July. Food, alcohol, and tobacco prices rose 1.2%, maintaining the same pace as the previous month.
The surge in inflation strengthens the case for the European Central Bank (ECB) to raise interest rates again at its upcoming policy meeting this month, following a hike in July.
