Eurozone Inflation Hits 2.9% Amid Energy Price Surge
The eurozone's inflation rate for July has been confirmed at 2.9 per cent, up from June's 2.8 per cent. According to Eurostat, the surge in energy costs is responsible for the rise in the overall cost-of-living index. Energy prices jumped a significant 10.3 per cent in July, exceeding the preliminary estimate of 10 per cent and surpassing last month's 8.5 per cent increase.
While energy costs drove the inflation rate up, other categories also saw increases, albeit less pronounced. Non-energy industrial goods rose by 0.9 per cent from June's 0.7 per cent, and services increased by 3.3 per cent from June's 3.2 per cent. In contrast, food, alcohol, and tobacco prices remained stable at 1.2 per cent.
Germany and France experienced notable inflation rate hikes, with Germany's rising to 2.8 per cent from 2.4 per cent and France's increasing to 2.4 per cent from 2 per cent. Spain also saw a slight increase in inflation to 3.9 per cent from 3.6 per cent.
