Eurozone Inflation Hits 3.3% as Energy Prices Soar
The eurozone's inflation rate has risen to 3.3%, exceeding expectations and setting the stage for another interest rate hike by the European Central Bank (ECB) in September.
This increase, four-tenths higher than July's 2.9% rate, puts more pressure on households and businesses struggling with financing costs, particularly those with variable-rate mortgages.
The main driver of this surge is energy prices, which rose by 14.3% in August compared to the same period last year.
According to Eurostat's advance estimate, core inflation, excluding energy, food, and services, fell from 2.5% to 2.4%, a relatively reassuring signal amidst this upward trend.
