Eurozone Inflation Hits 3.3%, Energy Prices Soar
The Eurozone inflation rate has climbed to 3.3% in August, its highest level since September 2024. Energy prices were the main driver of this increase, rising 14.3% from a year earlier.
This surge in energy costs pushed consumer-price growth to its fastest pace in nearly two years. The acceleration strengthens the case for another European Central Bank rate increase, adding borrowing-cost pressure for households and businesses already facing more expensive energy.
The ECB raised its key rate to 2.25% in June as policymakers responded to inflation pressures intensified by the Middle East conflict. Another rate increase would make the inflation fight more costly for the wider economy, weakening housing demand, raising debt-servicing expenses, and making new investment less attractive.
