Eurozone Inflation Jumps as Energy Prices Soar
The euro zone's inflation rate jumped to 3.3% in August, driven by a significant increase in energy prices. According to Eurostat's flash estimate, energy costs rose by 14.3% during the month, with natural gas prices reaching their highest level since Russia's invasion of Ukraine in 2022. Brent crude oil traded as high as USD94.39 a barrel during August, while refined products also reached some of their highest levels this year.
Despite the sharp increase in headline inflation, core inflation, which excludes food and fuel prices, eased to 2.1% in August from 2.2% in July. This trend suggests that higher commodity prices may not be fully transmitted to broader inflation yet, according to David Powell, an economist at Bloomberg Economics.
European Central Bank policymakers are set to meet next week to discuss whether to raise interest rates, with some members arguing for a hike before energy costs fuel further inflation, while others want to wait for more evidence of a pass-through effect.
