Eurozone Inflation Soars Above 3% on Energy Price Surge
The European Central Bank (ECB) is once again facing rising inflation concerns as August's preliminary Consumer Price Index (CPI) reached 3.3% year-over-year, surpassing expectations of 3.3%. This marks a return to the 3% threshold for the first time since May.
The primary driver behind this increase in inflation is a surge in energy prices, which saw a staggering 14.3% jump in August compared to 10.3% in July. Even on a monthly basis, energy prices rose by 2.9%, pushing up overall headline inflation by 0.4%.
Services inflation remained steady at 0.1%, while food price inflation was flat. However, core annual inflation eased slightly to 2.4%, the lowest since June, largely due to a decrease in services inflation from 3.3% to 3.0%. Food price inflation held steady at 1.2%, matching July's numbers.
The ECB is now under pressure to take decisive action against inflation, with some policymakers indicating that a September rate hike may be necessary to combat potential second-round effects.
