Eurozone Inflation Surges, ECB Faces Rate Hike Pressure

The Eurozone's inflation rate rebounded in July, defying expectations of a slowdown. The flare-up in the Iran conflict and a significant jump in crude oil prices contributed to this unexpected uptick.

The rise in headline inflation is largely due to energy costs, but it may prove temporary. However, the increase in core inflation - which strips out volatile energy prices - warrants closer attention as it suggests underlying price pressures are more persistent than anticipated.

The European Central Bank (ECB) is facing pressure from hawks on its Governing Council to raise interest rates in September. A lasting US-Iran peace deal would be the only realistic way for the ECB to avoid further tightening, but this option appears increasingly unlikely.
