Eurozone Inflation Surges, Strengthening Case for September Rate Hike
The Eurozone's inflation rate has surged to 3.3% in August, fueled by higher energy costs, according to data from Eurostat. This increase cements a strong case for another European Central Bank (ECB) interest rate hike this month.
Energy prices have risen due to higher crude oil and natural gas costs, as well as increased refiner margins. However, core inflation - which excludes volatile food and fuel prices - remained relatively modest at 2.4% in August, easing slightly from 2.5% in July.
The ECB's expected rate hike on September 10 to 2.50% is now seen as a done deal by financial markets, with investors focusing on the bank's future policy path.
