Eurozone Inflation Surges to 3.3% Amid Energy Price Crisis
The Eurozone inflation rate has surged to 3.3% in August, driven by skyrocketing energy prices linked to the ongoing Iran war and its disruption of global supply chains.
According to a flash estimate published by Eurostat on Tuesday morning, headline inflation in the euro area rose from 2.9% in July to 3.3% in August, reaching its highest level since September 2024.
The primary driver of this surge was energy inflation, which accelerated sharply to 14.3% in August from 10.3% the previous month, reflecting the euro zone's heavy dependence on imported energy.
The Iran war and blockage of the Strait of Hormuz have pushed up the cost of crude oil and refined products, while natural gas markets have also been severely disrupted.
