Eurozone Inflation Surges to 3.3%, Fueling ECB Rate Hike Expectations
The eurozone saw its inflation rate surge to 3.3% in August, marking the highest level in three years. This development has increased expectations that the European Central Bank (ECB) will raise interest rates next week to combat inflationary pressure.
The consumer price index (CPI) rose by 3.3% from a year earlier, exceeding July's 2.9% rate and surpassing September 2023's 4.3% increase. Energy prices drove the surge, increasing by 14.3%, followed by the services institutional sector at 3.0%. Core inflation, excluding food and energy, was slightly lower at 2.4%, down from 2.5% in July.
Markets anticipate that the ECB will implement another rate hike this month, following July's increase. If successful, the new benchmark rate would reach 2.50%. The previous rate hike occurred in June when the ECB raised its benchmark rate from an annual 2.0% to 2.25%.
