Eurozone Merchants Embrace Mobile Payments at Record Pace
Mobile payments have seen significant growth in acceptance among merchants in the eurozone. According to a recent survey by the European Central Bank (ECB), 68% of companies that receive payments in physical locations now accept mobile methods, compared to just 36% in 2024.
This represents a 32 percentage point increase over two years, making it the strongest change among main payment methods analyzed by the ECB. Cards are still widely accepted at 88%, while cash remains available at 92% of companies.
The growth of mobile payments is attributed to increasing familiarity with digital tools and the importance placed on customer preferences. When asked about their preferred payment method, a quarter of respondents cited consumer preference as the main criterion.
