A close ally of Kevin Warsh, Chair of the Federal Reserve Board, has publicly criticized Federal Reserve officials for describing current interest rates as restrictive.

The criticism comes as the Fed's benchmark federal funds target range currently stands at 3.50% to 3.75%, with the effective fed funds rate at 3.63% as of September 8, 2026.

According to recent Fed commentary, the current policy is only 'slightly restricting' demand, raising questions about whether the current stance is sufficient to guide inflation toward the 2% target.
