Fed and BoJ Rate Decisions Cast Shadow Over Bitcoin's $64,000 Price
Bitcoin is trading near $64,000 as the Federal Reserve and Bank of Japan prepare to announce interest rate decisions within two days of each other. Markets expect both central banks to hold rates steady, but uncertainty remains higher in Washington, where futures pricing reflects a one-in-three chance of a rate hike.
The Fed has maintained its target rate range between 3.5% and 3.75% since December 2025. A rate pause on Wednesday would mark the fifth consecutive pause. Market expectations shifted rapidly this month, with data from CME FedWatch showing July hike odds rose to 38% on July 23 before pulling back to 34.2%.
Inflation data from June signaled cooling pressures, but rising oil costs and renewed geopolitical tensions risk pushing July inflation figures higher ahead of their August 12 release. The Bank of Japan's rate decision is also a key event, with the BoJ expected to keep its policy rate at 1%. Currency pressure remains intense after the yen dropped past 163 per dollar last week.
Japanese officials have expressed readiness to intervene in foreign exchange markets if necessary. Finance Minister Satsuki Katayama stated that authorities are prepared to take decisive action, saying, 'If there is a need for it, we will take appropriate action at any time.' Long-term policy expectations lean toward tightening, with 86% of economists anticipating a rate hike to 1.25% by December.
