Fed and BoJ Rate Decisions Loom as Global Markets Await
The upcoming week will see crucial interest rate decisions in the US and Japan that could have far-reaching implications for global financial markets.
The Federal Reserve's Federal Open Market Committee is set to meet on the 15th and 16th, with market watchers closely monitoring whether the Fed will adjust its benchmark rate, currently at 3.5% to 3.75%. Despite five consecutive meetings where the rate has been left unchanged since January, concerns over a prolonged Middle East war and surging international oil prices may lead to a hike.
Even if no change is made, the Fed's policy stance is likely to remain hawkish. The dot plot showing individual policymakers' rate projections, the accompanying economic outlook, and a news conference by Fed Chair Kevin Warsh will be closely watched for insight into the central bank's thinking.
In Japan, the Bank of Japan will decide on rates at its monetary policy meeting on the 17th and 18th. With US Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent pushing to halt the yen's slide, a rate increase this month is seen as all but certain. This would come three months after a 0.25 percentage point hike in June lifted the benchmark rate above 1%.
