Fed Credibility at Risk Amid Inflation Concerns
The Federal Reserve's recent decision has left bond markets in an unusual position of control. Despite keeping interest rates steady, three dissenting policymakers highlighted the growing divide among Fed officials on how to combat inflation, which remains above the 2% target.
Chairman Kevin Warsh acknowledged rising short-term bond yields but emphasized that they don't obligate the Fed to follow suit with policy action. This lack of clear direction from the central bank has raised concerns about its credibility, according to Wall Street veteran Ed Yardeni, who stated, 'Talking hawkish but not acting so reduces the Fed's credibility.'
Bond investors have taken matters into their own hands, causing the Treasury curve to steepen and pushing 30-year U.S. bond yields to 19-year highs.
