Fed Credibility at Risk as Bond Markets Take Charge

The Federal Reserve's decision to keep interest rates steady has left bond markets in a precarious position. With three dissenting policymakers, including Chair Kevin Warsh, the central bank's credibility is at risk of being undermined.

Warsh emphasized that the rise in short-term bond yields was a welcome development, but it did not obligate the Fed to take action. However, he failed to provide any indication of the steps the central bank might take to contain inflation, which remains above the 2% target.

The Treasury curve has steepened, with the yield on the 30-year US bonds rising to 19-year highs. This shift in dynamics has raised questions about the Fed's independence and ability to effectively manage monetary policy.
