Fed Credibility Under Fire Amid Inflation Fears
The Federal Reserve's credibility is under scrutiny as St Louis Fed President Alberto Musalem advocates for a rate increase amidst concerns about inflation. The yield on 30-year US Treasuries has reached its highest level since 2007, touching 5.28%, amid fears that the central bank may struggle to contain inflationary pressure linked to the Iran war.
Musalem believes that the market reaction underscores the need for the Fed to match its anti-inflation messaging with action. He argues that earlier, incremental, and gradual rate action is preferable to larger and more abrupt moves later, after the Fed has missed its inflation target for over five years.
Three voting regional Fed presidents - Beth Hammack of Cleveland, Lorie Logan of Dallas, and Neel Kashkari of Minneapolis - also support a quarter-point increase. They warn that a wait-and-see approach on price stability risks forcing bigger rate increases later if inflation pressures strengthen.
