Fed Decision and Zhongji Innolight Debut to Test Hong Kong Stocks' Risk Appetite
Hong Kong stocks are bracing for a volatile trading session on Thursday as investors await the US Federal Reserve's interest rate decision and the debut of Zhongji Innolight, China's largest initial public offering (IPO) in seven years.
The Fed's rate policy meeting will be closely watched by markets globally, with anticipation over monetary tightening driving up US Treasury yields and weighing on technology stocks trading at high valuations.
Stephen Innes, a managing partner at SPI Asset Management, noted that the July meeting is less about whether the Fed hikes rates this week and more about how close it believes the economy is to the 'tripwire', a term used to describe the point at which inflation begins to rise significantly.
A hold accompanied by stronger language on inflation and geopolitical risk could still tighten financial conditions, particularly if new US Fed chairman Kevin Warsh refuses to push back against market expectations of a hawkish stance.
