Fed Decision Looms Large Over Gold Prices

Gold prices have been holding steady near $4,029 an ounce as traders await the Federal Reserve's decision on interest rates. Despite a wide policy debate, futures markets still favor no change in rates, with about a 68% probability of a hold and around a 32% chance of a quarter-point increase.

The market is particularly focused on how forcefully Fed Chair Kevin Warsh addresses inflation, as his tone could have significant implications for gold prices. A less hawkish message from the Fed would likely boost gold and put pressure on the US dollar index (UUP).

Central-bank buying remains a key support for gold, with 89% of surveyed reserve managers expecting global official-sector gold holdings to increase over the next 12 months. However, a firmer US currency makes bullion more expensive for overseas buyers and can reduce demand.
