Fed Extends Pause on Reserve Management Purchases
The Federal Reserve has announced that it will not conduct reserve management purchases of Treasury bills in the upcoming monthly period. This marks the second consecutive month without such operations, according to Bloomberg. The decision suggests policymakers are at ease with the current level of bank reserves in the financial system.
According to the New York Fed's open markets desk, there are no plans for reserve management purchases over the monthly period ending October 14. However, it still intends to carry out roughly $15.6 billion in reinvestment purchases during that time.
The pause reflects confidence in the smooth operation of funding markets. The Secured Overnight Financing Rate, a benchmark tied to the cost of borrowing against Treasury securities, traded at or below the interest on reserve balances rate for most of the past month.
