Fed Faced with Rate Hike Decision Amid Stubborn Inflation
The Federal Reserve meeting next week is set to be a crucial test for new Fed Chair Kevin Warsh, whose approach to inflation has already been under scrutiny. Investors are increasingly expecting a rate hike at the meeting, with a probability of around 85% to 90%, according to the CME Group's FedWatch gauge.
The latest Consumer Price Index (CPI) data showed headline inflation rising 0.4% in August from July and 3.4% over the past year, both in line with expectations. However, core CPI, which strips out volatile food and energy prices, rose 0.3% during the month, faster than expected.
Some policymakers argue that interest rates are not sufficiently restrictive to bring inflation back to 2%, while others believe inflation would naturally moderate during the second half of the year. The decision to raise or hold rates is likely to be a close call, with significant implications for households and businesses.
