The US Federal Reserve is facing a new challenge in its fight against inflation: AI's massive capital expenditure. According to minutes released in July 2026, the Fed has identified three major risks to current US inflation: AI investment, Middle East geopolitical conflict, and tariff policy.

Fed officials are sharply divided over AI's economic consequences. Some argue that the 'brute-force investment' in AI infrastructure is exerting significant upward pressure on prices, citing rising electricity costs as an example. Tech giants like Alphabet have been forced to raise end-product prices due to rising component costs, signaling that cost pressures are cascading downstream through the AI supply chain.

However, others led by Fed Chair Kevin Warsh hold a 'techno-optimist' view, arguing that AI will ultimately reduce production costs and increase aggregate supply by dramatically boosting productivity. They see AI as a tool to achieve the dual mandate of 'price stability and full employment.'
