Fed Faces Critical Decision on Interest Rates Amid Stubborn Inflation
The Federal Reserve is set to make a critical decision on interest rates this week. The central bank's rate-setting committee, led by Chairman Kevin Warsh, is expected to hold rates steady in an effort to curb stubborn inflation.
Warsh has been careful not to tip his hand about where he thinks rates should go, but he told lawmakers earlier this month that the committee has 'no tolerance for persistently elevated inflation' and a 'resolute commitment to restore price stability.'
The annual inflation rate reached 4.2% in May, its highest level in over three years, driven by a wartime spike in gasoline prices. However, inflation cooled somewhat last month, giving the Fed some breathing room to consider holding rates steady.
Investors see a possibility that the Fed raises rates on Wednesday in response to stubborn inflation. Higher interest rates tend to be a drag on the job market, while lower rates can boost hiring.
