Fed Faces Dilemma as Economy Sends Mixed Signals
The US economy is sending mixed signals ahead of the Federal Reserve's next meeting, with unemployment at a record low and inflation on the rise. The number of Americans filing for unemployment has dropped to an estimated 187,000 last week, a level not seen since September 1969. This marks a new low in jobless claims, which President Donald Trump has pointed to as evidence of a strong economy.
However, Josh Bivens, Chief Economist with the Economic Policy Institute, warns that inflation is on the rise and could reach 3.5% this year, erasing real income gains for many Americans. The inability to bring the war in Iran to an end and reopen the world's biggest shipping waterway has led to spiking oil and gas prices.
President Trump has also implemented new tariffs on goods from over 80 countries, ranging from 10% to 12.5%. This has put pressure on the Federal Reserve to lower interest rates at next week's meeting, with some predicting an unpredictable outcome.
