Fed Faces Dilemma as Growth Slows and Inflation Remains High

The week's biggest story was the Core PCE inflation reading, which came in at 3.3% and showed that growth is losing momentum while inflation remains high.

This has left the Federal Reserve with a delicate balancing act: to control inflation without stifling growth. The Fed views elevated Treasury yields as part of its policy transmission mechanism, but the Treasury Department sees them as a financing risk that needs managing.

The market is caught between these two competing forces, and investors have become cautious about assuming easier policy is around the corner.

The Jackson Hole meeting was a communication test for the Fed, with policymakers trying to explain how they weigh conflicting signals without locking themselves into a fixed path. Kevin Warsh argued that policymakers should clarify their interpretation of inflation, employment, and financial conditions.

In other news, Iran and Oman have made progress on talks to establish a temporary maritime corridor and mine-clearing operations around the Strait of Hormuz. This has helped reduce tensions and led to a decline in Brent prices.
