Fed Faces High Stakes Rate Decision Amid Soaring Inflation

The US Federal Reserve is set to make a crucial decision on interest rates this week as it tackles persistently high inflation, which has been exacerbated by President Donald Trump's tariffs and energy price shocks. Analysts say that central bank chief Kevin Warsh's credibility is on the line as he faces his first real test since taking office.

Warsh was appointed by Trump and has advocated for lower interest rates in the past due to expected productivity gains from AI technology. However, in recent weeks, he has doubled down on the Fed's mandate to bring inflation down.

The market expectations of a 25-basis-point rate hike have surged to over 85 percent according to CME's FedWatch tool, following new data that showed consumer inflation remaining steady at 3.4 percent in August.

David Wessel, senior fellow at the Brookings Institution, said, 'This is the test. This is what comes with that job, and now he has to decide how to handle it.'
