Fed Faces Pressure to Act on Inflation Amid Iran Tensions

The Federal Reserve is widely expected to maintain its benchmark interest rate this week despite growing frustration with inflation, which has surpassed the central bank's 2% target for over five years.

New Fed Chair Kevin Warsh, who presided over his second policy meeting this week, expressed 'no tolerance' for elevated inflation in a recent speech to Congress. However, policymakers may choose to hold off on raising rates, possibly due to concerns about disrupting financial markets that are not anticipating a rate increase.

Economists at BNP Paribas Securities suggest it's possible the Fed could implement a 'shock rate hike' this week, but more likely, they expect policymakers will delay action. A significant number of Wall Street traders also predict a rate hike in September, with 76% foreseeing an increase next month.

The Fed's decision is being complicated by rising tensions between the US and Iran, which have driven oil prices above $100 a barrel last week. The potential for further disruptions to global energy supplies keeps policymakers on edge, making it challenging for them to determine whether current inflation levels are a 'transient blip' or a long-term trend.

In June, core inflation, excluding volatile food and energy prices, cooled somewhat due to slower growth in apartment rents and lower gasoline prices. However, several Fed policymakers argue that rates will need to be raised to return inflation to the 2% target.
