Fed Faces Pressure to Hike Rates Amid Rising Inflation Concerns
The Federal Reserve is expected to keep its key interest rate unchanged when it meets on Tuesday and Wednesday, despite pressure from some officials to hike rates soon.
This decision comes as the Iran war has reignited, pushing oil and gas prices higher and exacerbating inflation concerns. The artificial intelligence buildout is also driving up costs for laptops, smartphones, and electricity, while new tariffs imposed by President Donald Trump on dozens of U.S. trading partners could further contribute to price hikes.
According to the Fed's preferred measure, inflation has exceeded its 2% target for more than five years, making it harder for the central bank to ignore price spikes. Core inflation, which excludes energy and food categories, has risen since last December and has been stuck at around 3% or higher since 2023.
Lorie Logan, president of the Federal Reserve Bank of Dallas, recently stated that 'modestly higher interest rates would better balance the outlook' due to inflation concerns. As a voting member of the Fed's rate-setting committee, her comments add weight to calls for rate hikes.
