Fed Faces Rate Hike Dilemma Amid Stubborn Inflation

The Federal Reserve is facing pressure to raise interest rates in response to stubborn inflation and economic strains.

Inflation climbed 3.4% on an annual basis in August, with core inflation rising 0.3% to 2.4% from a year ago, still above the central bank's target of 2%.

Investors are largely certain that the Fed will approve a quarter-point increase to its benchmark interest rate this week, with some analysts predicting another hike by the end of the year to bring the rate up to 4% or 4.25%.

The decision is not without risks, however, as higher rates could squeeze the economy and add pressure on consumers already struggling with high gas prices and stagnant wages.
