Fed Fights for Independence Amid Trump Pressure
A recent discussion at Jackson Hole, Wyo., highlighted the challenges facing the Federal Reserve in its pursuit of independence from politics. Kenneth Rogoff, a Harvard economist and former Fed official, advised that the Fed should consider delaying its rate decision until after the midterm elections to avoid further confrontation with President Donald Trump.
However, Claudia Sahm argues that playing politics is a terrible strategy for the Fed. She points out that even in the face of presidential pressure, the Fed has consistently maintained its independence and made decisions based on economic data rather than electoral calendars.
Sahm notes that Kenneth Rogoff's own research from 1983 demonstrated the importance of central bank credibility in maintaining low inflation expectations. She argues that the Fed should stay focused on its core mission of promoting maximum employment and price stability, rather than trying to appease the White House or Congress.
