Fed Governor Lisa Cook Fights Back Against Trump's Mortgage Fraud Allegations
Federal Reserve Governor Lisa Cook has rejected mortgage fraud allegations brought by the Trump administration in a move that threatens to escalate tensions between the White House and the central bank.
Cook, who was appointed to the Federal Reserve Board last year, denies making false statements on multiple mortgage agreements as claimed by the Trump administration. She argues that an inadvertent error is not fraud, pointing out that even President Trump and members of his cabinet have reportedly made similar mistakes in their own real estate paperwork.
The controversy stems from a referral by Federal Housing Finance Agency (FHFA) Director Bill Pulte, who accused Cook of listing multiple properties as her primary residence on various mortgage documents. The administration claimed this could have potentially secured her more favorable loan terms.
Cook's defense team has emphasized that she 'has never committed mortgage fraud or any intentional wrongdoing' and that the Trump administration is trying to oust her due to policy differences rather than a genuine concern about the allegations.
