Fed Governor Warns of Decisive Action on Rates Amid Inflation Concerns

Federal Reserve Governor Michael S. Barr emphasized the importance of monitoring inflation trends in his recent speech at the Second Chance Lending Forum. He noted that while the labor market is stable with low unemployment and the economy is growing solidly, driven in part by AI-related investments, there are risks to consider.

The rapid build-out of AI capabilities has pushed things off course, Barr said, citing tariffs and conflicts in the Middle East as additional shocks. He expressed concern that inflation above target for a protracted period could lead to broader price pressures.

Barr stated that at the next FOMC meeting in September, they will discuss the outlook for inflation and policy stance. If data suggests inflation is moderating towards 2%, they can reassess their policy. However, if it appears not to be moderating sufficiently, he believes they should act decisively to raise rates.

His comments come after Fed Chairman Kevin Warsh noted there's 'work to do' to move inflation towards the Fed's goal of 2%. At its last meeting, three Fed members voted for a rate hike, citing worries about continued rising inflation without restrictive policy interventions and Iran war-related energy costs.
