Fed Hawkish Stance Widens Rate Gap with Canada
The US Federal Reserve's hawkish stance on inflation has widened the gap in interest rates between the US and Canada, with the Bank of Canada holding its benchmark rate at 2.25 per cent for six consecutive announcements while the Fed's rate remains at 3.50-3.75 per cent.
Fed Chairman Kevin Warsh emphasized the importance of tackling inflation in his recent speech in Wyoming, stating that 'elevated prices are our main concern' and that financial conditions are no longer restrictive.
Warsh's comments have led to a strengthening US dollar, with the USD-CAD exchange rate reaching 1.39 by the end of last week, up from a three-month high for the Canadian dollar just a week earlier.
