Fed Hawkishness, Tariffs Weigh on Indian Stocks

The Federal Reserve's hawkish stance and fresh US trade tariffs have created uncertainty for Indian stocks. The Fed's decision to hold interest rates at 3.5-3.75 percent, without offering forward guidance, has left markets uncertain about the inflation outlook.

Sneha Pandey, fund manager at Quantum AMC, notes that a stronger dollar narrows the Reserve Bank of India's room for easing monetary policy and keeps the rupee on the defensive. Elevated oil prices have sharpened India's twin-deficit worry due to its heavy import dependence.

The absence of forward guidance from the Fed has led market participants to assign a higher probability to interest rates remaining unchanged at their September meeting. The US tariffs, announced last week, have added to global jitters and fuelled worries over a prolonged high-rate environment.
