Fed Hits Pause on Reserve Management Purchases Until Mid-October

The Federal Reserve has decided to pause its reserve management bond purchases until mid-October. This is the second consecutive month that policymakers have chosen not to conduct short-term Treasury bond purchases for reserve management purposes.

This decision suggests that the Fed is confident in the smooth functioning of funding markets, as evidenced by recent data showing that secured overnight financing rates have been at or below interest on reserve balances. Additionally, the US Treasury has reduced its supply of Treasury bills ahead of the quarterly tax deadline.

Wall Street strategists had previously expected this pause and anticipate resumption in mid-October. However, some analysts believe the Fed will maintain the pause for the remainder of the year due to ample bank reserve balances.
