Fed Holds Rates Steady Amidst Inflation Fears and Middle East Unrest
The Federal Reserve held interest rates steady on Wednesday as the US economy navigated rising inflation. The decision came amidst a surge in oil prices and stock market volatility following renewed fighting in the Middle East.
The war has driven up fuel costs, pushing inflation to a three-year high of 3.5%. Fed Chair Kevin Warsh has vowed to bring inflation down to the central bank's target rate of 2%.
Nine members of the Federal Open Market Committee voted in favor of maintaining current interest rates, while three supported a quarter-point increase.
The odds are in favor of a rate hike in September, according to the CME Group's FedWatch Tool. However, raising interest rates could slow down hiring, which has remained resilient despite increased costs for shoppers and businesses.
