Fed Holds Rates Steady as Markets Anticipate Future Hike
US Federal Reserve Chair Kevin Warsh reaffirmed the central bank's commitment to fighting inflation despite leaving interest rates unchanged. The decision was a split one, with three of the 12 Federal Open Market Committee members voting for a quarter-point hike.
Warsh noted that underlying inflation has been reaccelerating due to rising global fuel and food prices tied to the Middle East conflict and surging business spending related to artificial intelligence. However, he declined to suggest that a rate hike was the necessary solution, instead emphasizing the Fed's focus on bringing down inflation.
The market reacted with caution, questioning the Fed's credibility after bond yields rose following the decision. Financial markets are now anticipating a potential interest rate hike in September unless labor market data collapses or core inflation prints closer to 2 percent annualized.
