Fed Interest Rate Decision Clouded by Rising Oil Prices and Inflation Fears
The Federal Reserve is set to make its next interest rate decision this week, but renewed hostilities in Iran and rising oil prices have raised questions about what's next. Most analysts expect rates to remain unchanged, but a growing chorus of Fed officials are signaling that patience on inflation may be wearing thin.
Under new chair Kevin Warsh, the Fed has taken a deliberately vague approach to signaling its economic outlook. Unlike previous chairs, Warsh has given few clear signals about how he views the economy and what direction policy may move.
The White House is also putting pressure on the Fed, with President Trump repeatedly urging lower interest rates to boost the economy and reduce borrowing costs. While Trump has struck a more measured tone with Warsh than with former chair Jerome Powell, he continues to press for lower rates.
Warsh's lack of guidance has led other Fed officials to take a more proactive approach to signaling their views on policy. A growing number are signaling that they may need to raise rates sooner rather than later to combat stubborn inflation.
