Fed Interest Rate Decision Looms Large, With Rate Hike Odds Near 38%

The Federal Reserve's July interest rate decision is just around the corner, and market participants are bracing for the outcome. According to the CME FedWatch tool, there's a roughly 1-in-3 chance that the Fed will raise interest rates on Wednesday, with odds near 38% as of July 24.

This rapid repricing has been driven by three key factors: crude oil trading back above $100 per barrel due to US-Iran tensions, the Fed's own June dot plot showing 9 out of 18 officials projecting a 2026 hike, and Chair Kevin Warsh's hawkish rhetoric. Warsh has stated that the committee has 'no tolerance for persistently elevated inflation' and that 'prices are too high', suggesting that he may be inclined to raise rates.

However, the labor market is also a key consideration for the Fed. The June nonfarm payrolls came in at +57,000, which is lower than expected and could argue against a rate hike. This tension between inflation concerns and labor market weakness makes the outcome of the decision uncertain.
