Fed Interest Rate Divide Leaves Markets Guessing
The Federal Reserve is divided on interest rates, with conflicting views from its members. Federal Reserve Chair Kevin Warsh has signaled that a rate hike could be on the table to address persistently high inflation, but Governor Christopher Waller believes rates could remain unchanged if inflation continues to cool.
Vice President JD Vance wants the Fed to lower rates to make homes more affordable. The conflicting views have left markets in guessing mode as to which option the Fed will choose at its September meeting.
The probability of a rate hike has dropped to 50.2% from 63.2% on Wednesday, according to the CME FedWatch tool. This comes after Waller expressed confidence in current inflation trends and said that impacts from tariffs and higher energy prices did not really affect the economy.
