Fed Interest Rate Hike Debate Heats Up Ahead of Crucial Meeting
A heated debate over interest rates is unfolding within the Federal Reserve and the White House. Former Cleveland Fed President Loretta Mester has called for a rate hike, while economist Mohamed El-Erian opposes it.
Mester's argument is based on the Fed's preferred gauge, which shows core Personal Consumption Expenditures reaching its highest level in at least a year. This comes as Canada's retaliatory tariffs took effect on September 8, ranging from 15% to 50% on $20 billion of American exports.
In contrast, El-Erian believes that raising rates would slow the parts of the economy working while doing little to those not working. He also points out that a Fed hike cannot repeal a tariff or pump more crude out of the ground.
