Fed Keeps Interest Rates High as HKMA Warns of Rate Risks
The U.S. Federal Reserve has maintained its interest rates for the fifth consecutive time, keeping the target range at 3.50% to 3.75%. This decision was widely expected by market analysts and has sparked a warning from the Hong Kong Monetary Authority (HKMA) about the risks associated with interest rates.
The HKMA emphasized that the interest rate environment remains uncertain and urged the public to carefully manage their exposure to interest rate risks when making property purchases, investments, or borrowing decisions. This cautionary note is particularly relevant in Hong Kong's current economic climate, where property market adjustments are underway due to increased mortgage burdens.
Hong Kong's Linked Exchange Rate System means that its interest rates closely follow those of the U.S., leaving little room for independent adjustment. As a result, when the Fed maintains high rates, Hong Kong's interbank rates also remain elevated, impacting financing costs such as mortgage loans and corporate lending.
