Fed Keeps Rates Steady Amid Renewed Inflation Fears
The Federal Reserve maintained its benchmark interest rate at a target range of 3.50% to 3.75%, as expected, following its July meeting. The decision was made by a vote of 9-3, with three members favoring a quarter-point rate hike.
In his second press conference since becoming Fed chair, Kevin Warsh stated that the central bank 'will deliver price stability' and would 'not hesitate to act' to achieve its goal. He emphasized that despite recent shocks, trends are positive and reveal solid growth, with business investment showing remarkable resilience.
The Fed's decision comes as it continues to grapple with inflation. The Consumer Price Index (CPI) showed cooling inflation in June, but a renewed oil shock from the ongoing conflict in the Middle East has rekindled inflation fears. As a result, investors are now pricing in the possibility of one or more rate hikes later this year.
