Fed Meeting Brings High Uncertainty for Markets
Investors are bracing for a potentially hawkish Federal Reserve meeting on Wednesday, which could have significant implications for markets. The central bank is expected to keep interest rates unchanged, but there's growing uncertainty about the direction of monetary policy.
A recent survey by the CME FedWatch tool shows that investors see a 71% chance that the Fed will keep rates steady and a 29% chance that they will be hiked by 25 basis points. This level of uncertainty is the highest since 2024, when markets were split over how much the Fed would cut interest rates.
Bank of America notes that this uncertainty is 'highly unusual.' Even if the Fed doesn't raise rates this week, investors expect a hike later in the year due to recent swings in oil prices. Brent oil tumbled from its wartime peak as a resolution between the US and Iran appeared close, but jumped back above $100 a barrel as talks broke down earlier this month.
Other central bankers may issue hawkish messaging about what they think the path forward could be, even if the Fed keeps rates on hold. This could lead to potential dissents in favor of hikes. The true source of inflation is supply-side factors, and tightening monetary policy doesn't address these issues.
